Where We Are in the Story
Immediately before this, council response to lazarus and the death plot carries the story through John 11:45-57. Here, in A supper in Bethany, six days before Passover, Mary fills the house with the fragrance of costly perfume as she anoints Jesus' feet. Jesus receives her devotion as preparation for His burial and exposes Judas's false concern for the poor. The story then moves into lazarus as living witness and target (John 12:9-11).
